The Cadillac XT5 and Parallels by Design: Materials
At the intersection of two seemingly unrelated philosophies, we find parallels: dualistic principles of mutual understanding. Parallels By Design embarks on an exploration of concept, craftsmanship and the artisans who make innovation tangible. Take a closer look at the first-ever Cadillac XT5 and our journey with Public School to discover the parallels that unite our distinguished crafts.
Elevated surfaces – The Cadillac design team utilizes material as a means of establishing a vehicle’s personality while complementing the personality of the driver. This process involves sourcing hand-inspected materials that people are familiar with and combining them in an entirely new way. Every leather appointment and trim combination must exhibit a compelling balance of trend and longevity.
Material choices are aimed solely at elevating the overall driving experience—indulgent leathers found at several driver touch points reinforce Cadillac’s driver-centric philosophy. Careful consideration must be applied to interior elements such as the steering wheel and seat, where the driver feels most connected to the vehicle.
The XT5 Platinum features semi-aniline full leather seats; each is comprised of nearly 100 soft-cut trim pieces and derived from one complete hide. The resulting product will exhibit precise craftsmanship and extended comfort.
For the XT5, the Cadillac color and trim designers created a modern, fresh range of personas never before offered in a crossover. Each represents a compelling combination that is both tasteful and understated, like Jet Black and Light Vanilla paired with premium Sapelle wood. Such interior themes move Cadillac into a color space that has remained unexplored until now.
At Cadillac, trim materials are held to the same standards as the leathers. Every wood accent found in the Cadillac XT5 interior is genuine—beginning as a natural species and given a premium finish. Different matte and high-gloss finishes provide diversity amongst the interior trim offerings, while the implementation of genuine aluminums and carbon fiber provide yet another level of possibility. Varying trim accents allow the team to express a multitude of themes within one vehicle portfolio.
Powerful material arrangements are the result of hands-on experimentation. The Cadillac designers use an array of modular prototypes to check contrasts between materials and determine what color and trim combinations will best complement the vehicle’s interior environment. Such prototypes allow the team to explore every possibility.
Starting point – Textiles and fabrication are the starting point for each Public School collection. The team looks for inspiration in the materials found in textile mills as well as any vintage sample references they may encounter. Ultimately, the materials will provide the spark from which the season will evolve.
The Pre-Fall Collection represents a significant departure for the Public School design team. The modern materials exhibited in their past collections have taken a turn for the organic. Tensions arise where these two worlds meet—natural linen layered with contemporary leather creates a striking contrast.
The Pre-Fall Collection makes its debut in Dubai, where the landscape serves as a reflection of the season. The crossing of modern technology and desert space provides the perfect setting to showcase the collection.
Materials and fabrics are the most influential pieces of the Public School aesthetic. The integrity of a collection hinges on the textiles of which it’s comprised. The team sources their materials from the most reputable mills from around the world and utilizes them to convey substance. Each Public School garment should last not just one season, but for an entire lifetime.
